Although Poland may have been “stridently hostile toward immigrants” at the time of this writing, it would be good to write an addendum praising the country for the overwhelming welcome, succor, and care it’s giving to fleeing Ukrainians. Straining their own economy, the Poles are a remarkable example of the goodness of humanity in a time of unspeakable evil.

Although I suppose you could say it’s an example of the kind of rekindling of democracy you write about here, it is so much more than that — a beacon of light in such bleak times.

True. I am most concerned about long-range consequences. As mentioned, I despair at the fading of democracy both globally and here.

Yes, Poland has been exceedingly generous in receiving those fleeing neighboring Ukraine. When those in peril were dark-skinned Arabs and Afghans, their borders were sealed.
