I did not know that “Ethical” was intended to be an adjective expressing aspiration, a very useful fact. Indeed, “woe to those who identify as an achievement.” To the wisdom of humility! Thanks.

I’ve witnessed the perils to which you refer, including a good amount of dishonesty, disapproval of other members, and public self-righteousness. It’s been off-putting, divisive, and incompatible with my principles and the stated principles of Ethical. Might that be part of why “the movement” hasn’t grown in decades? While a member of Ethical, I am happy to have found more thoughtful conversations and diverse opinions through the Stoicism and philosophy groups often led by Massimo Pigliucci, sometimes in partnership with others. That's a rapidly growing movement locally, nationally, and internationally. There might be something to be learned from it. Just saying, looking in the mirror’s good, but so is looking at what’s happening in the larger competitive universe.

Many thanks, Francesca, for your thoughts emerging from your experience. You seem to confirm that a conscious and self-professed commitment to ethics can bring what may be an excessive mien of self-righteousness. Needless to say, this is not the sole possession of people in the Ethical Movement. I conclude it is a ubiquitous propensity.

Massimo Pigliucci has been making the rounds in Ethical Societies for several years. I have read his book on Stoicism and have found it of value. In the development of character we have to learn from many sources, I believe. Many thanks for your ongoing interest.

Widespread, definitely, but perhaps a bit more off-putting when you label yourself Ethical. Re Massimo and Stoicism (which is now called “Philosophy of Life,” based on a Hadot book of that title), the FB Stoicism group alone has about 100,000 members, so your “making the rounds” reference kinda ignores the fact that the appeal of Stoicism has reached far beyond the small population of Ethical Societies. Events and books are numerous. Massimo even has a Great Courses series. As you say, “learning from many sources” matters. With gratitude,

Yes, Stoicism has become an international movement. Massimo is to be commended for his extraordinary productivity - books, talks, workshops, videos, Patreon outreach, etc. "Ethical" was intended to be a adjective expressing aspiration. Woe to those who identify as an achievement. This is where self-scrutiny and humility kick in. And thanks to you.
